This year for Halloween, Arden requested to be a character from her favorite movie – “Yellow Guys”. You would know it as Despicable Me. Despicable Me is the first movie she started to pay attention to, and I think I’ve seen it at least 50 times now.
This was a good year for this type of costume; one involving more creativity and crafting than sewing since I’m pretty busy with the baby and a preschooler. We had our test run at her dance class Halloween party and I think trick-or-treating is going to be a major hit this year.
Plain yellow hoodies in a 2T are a little difficult to come by, so this is a plain white hoodie from a local embroidery and screen printing shop that I dyed yellow. It took the color beautifully, I think. The hair is the cheapest black yarn I could find and tacked down with a narrow multiple zig-zag stitch so I can remove it later and she can wear the plain hoodie.
The overalls are just boys Osh Kosh from Target. I cut out and stitched the G symbol for Gru, the main super-villain.
The best part are the child-sized lab safety goggles I ordered and then spray painted the edges using stainless steel paint. I only did a narrow band to leave her peripheral vision intact and made the eye holes as large as possible. I think they turned out really cute.
We’ll probably have to explain the costume to anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, but I think those who have seen it will appreciate it. I really like unique costumes, so maybe I’m a bit partial. Dave is planning to dress up as Gru to take her out, so I guess that leaves me home with the baby to hand out candy. I would really like to take her around so maybe we’ll haul out the sit n’ stand stroller and take the whole family for a spin around the neighborhood.
What a cute outfit!
love the detail logo on the front of the overall!
what kind of Dye did you use for the sweat shirt?
Rit dye – it’s my go-to dye.
What was the actual color of dye you used? I want to make this costume for my son this year but I’ve only seen golden yellow.
What was the actual color of dye you used? I want to make this costume for my son this year and the only color I’ve seen is golden yellow. I bought 2 to inhance the color. Will that work?
It’s been a couple of years so i’m not 100%the sure of the color but I know there aren’t many shades available so that’s probably it. I did use the salt or vinegar depending on fabric to enhance the color but only one packet of dye. Hope that helps, I’d love to see pics of your version!
what is your source for the goggles? they’re PERFECT! thanks in advance!
I purchased them from a website called Educational Innovations.http://www.teachersource.com/product/childrens-safety-goggles/lab-equipment?gclid=CIX6mbvKjrkCFZFFMgodiWwANg
How did you spray paint the goggles…? Did u use any tape
Yes, I taped off the strap and sides except for a narrow band around the edge, and then I made circles from tape to cover the eye on each side.
Thanks for your reply. I actually found Lemon Yellow at Walmart and the color turned out great! I sewed Black yarn at the top and it’s adorable!!
